My Life as a White Trash Zombie is the first in a delightfully quirky series by Diana Rowland. This is a unconventional take on the zombie genre. Angel wakes up after a car accident with no injuries and a mysterious craving. An unknown benefactor has left her with a choice to take the job at the local morgue or go to jail for breaking parole. This tale is full of humour and heart in a combination of a murder mystery and coming of age story. Angel learns not only to survive as a zombie but also to flourish as a human.

I especially enjoyed seeing the world through Angel's eyes. She has a down to earth perspective accompanying her questioning nature. I relished her discovery of her zombie nature and was absorbed by search for her creator. As she puts more of the puzzle pieces together an inner heroism begins to grow and change her outlook on life. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a strong female lead and who isn't too squeamish.
