A young Cleopatra (yes, that Cleopatra) is bored with her humdrum life in the palace and the responsibilities she will soon have to bear. So when sneaking off one day with her friend she isn’t that upset when a mysterious tablet yanks her into the distant future. She starts attending Yasiro Academy, which has boring classes like biology and alien languages, but also combat training, which is much more her style. Being stuck in the future would probably have been alright if the evil Xaius Octavian wasn’t bent on taking over the galaxy. Oh, and if everyone around Cleopatra wasn’t convinced she was the long prophesied Saviour, destined to defeat Octavian and his troops and restore peace and order to the galaxy. It’s a bit much for a 15 year old former princess to take in.

Adapted from his webcomic of the same name, Mike Maihack’s graphic novel series is sure to be a hit with all lovers of adventures and plucky school aged stories. It hits all the right notes and its characters are interesting and lovable. Cleopatra herself is brash but courageous, her nerdy best friend Akila lugs textbooks around on quests, and their much put upon teacher Khensu just happens to be a cat.

The first three volumes: Target Practice, The Thief and the Sword, and Secret of the Time Tablets are shelved in the Juvenile Graphic Novels collection under J MAI. Book 4: The Golden Lion was just published and will be available soon.

Fans of this series may also want to check out The Jedi Academy series by Jeffrey Brown shelved in the Juvenile Graphic Novels under J STA and the Zita the Spacegirl series by Ben Hatke – also shelved in the Juvenile Graphic Novels under J HAT.
