The French Language Resource Centre was established in 2006 for the purpose of providing materials for teachers of French as a Second Language to assist them and their students in the study of the French language. The collection has expanded to include materials for teachers working in French Immersion and in Francophone programs as well. This collection includes over 8000 items – materials such as kits, DVDs, class reading sets, games and much more. The items can be borrowed by anyone with a valid Grande Prairie Public Library membership card.
The French Language Resource Centre is made possible through a consortium arrangement of multiple partners:
- Peace Wapiti School Division
- GP Public School District
- GP and Catholic Schools
- Conseil scolaire du Nord- Ouest
- Grande Prairie Public Library
- Peace Library System
- Canadian Parents for French
- L’Association canadienne-francaise de l’Alberta
- Grande Prairie Regional College
- High Prairie School Division
- Peace River School Division
- Northwest Regional Learning Consortium
Because the school boards have schools outside of the City of Grande Prairie, each teacher in these communities is encouraged to get a membership in their local public library. They can then either come to Grande Prairie to borrow materials or they can request items via their home library from Grande Prairie’s collection. Because of the nature of the collection, only books are available for loan outside of Grande Prairie. Kits, class sets or games are not eligible for loan to patrons outside Grande Prairie.
Normally the items are available for a three week loan period, but teachers can ask for a loan extension of six weeks. Items can be renewed twice more - each time for three weeks longer.
